Apart from the mainstream cruise lines, the smaller ships of the smaller cruise lines are able to get into more of the less mainstream ports of call.  This allows visitors to really see life in its true colours in various locations in the Mediterranean region.  These ports of call in the Western Mediterranean area include St. Tropez, La Spezia, Cinque Terre, Le Lavandou, St. Raphael, Portimao, Portofino, Gaeta, Lipari Island, Portoferraio, Sete & Calvi.
.

Some of the ports of call of the mainstream lines, would be Civitavecchia, Livorno, Barcelona, Palma, Gibraltar, Palermo, Toulon, Villefranche, Malaga, Naples, Catania, Palermo, Valletta, Ajaccio, Valencia, Ibiza, Cartagena (Spain), Cagliari.

Places to Visit

.

One of the real attractions in Gibraltar are the Rock Apes.  These wonderful creatures are that used to visitors, that when you are ready to take photographs of them you suddenly see them start to pose for you.  I couldn’t believe it when I was there the way one female with her young one suddenly made sure the little one was looking towards the camera and she made sure she looked good. The guide who was with us said they really know they are the star attractions.

.

From Civitavecchia your main excursion would be to the Eternal City of Rome with all it has to offer, including the famous Coliseum, Trevi Fountain, Vatican and St Peters Cathedral.

.

From Livorno the choice is yours Florence or Pisa for the leaning tower.  Some tours allow for time at both but really you need a day at each so you can always leave one destination for another cruise.

From Naples you can either stay in town or take a look around, go down the coast or as many people do take an excursion over to the island of Capri.  You do need a head for heights as the roads up to the top of the island here are extremely narrow and steep.  The main areas are at the top with nothing much at lower level.
